How to Cure Weed: The Simple, Repeatable Method
Curing is what turns a decent harvest into smooth, great-tasting flower. Drying gets buds safe to store; curing finishes the job so the smoke is velvet and the aroma pops. Follow this straightforward process once and you can repeat it every harvest.

Drying vs. curing (why both matter)
-
Drying: 7โ14 days in the dark with gentle airflow. Goal is to remove surface moisture so buds donโt mold.
-
Curing: 2โ8 weeks in airtight jars. Moisture equalizes from the center out, chlorophyll breaks down, terpenes bloom, and the burn turns clean.
Skip curing and youโll still have weedโjust not the smooth, flavorful kind you were growing for.
Tools you actually need
-
Clean glass jars with airtight lids (a few small, a few large)
-
Two-way humidity packs (58% or 62%)
-
Hygrometer for at least one jar
-
Cool, dark shelf: 15โ21 ยฐC (60โ70 ยฐF)
-
Tape and marker for strain and date
Step-by-step: how to cure weed in a jar
1) Make sure the dry is finished
-
Small stems should snap, not bend.
-
Buds feel dry outside but not crumbly.
-
If stems are rubbery, keep drying.
2) Trim
Dry trim for maximum trichome protection in drier climates; wet trim if humidity is high. Either way, trim over a clean tray and wear gloves.
3) Jar it
Fill each jar 70โ80% full so thereโs some air space but not a huge pocket of oxygen. Add a 58% or 62% pack and seal.
4) Burp on a taper
-
Week 1: Open once or twice daily for 5โ10 minutes. If jar RH stays over 65โ70% an hour after closing, spread buds on parchment for 30โ60 minutes, then re-jar.
-
Week 2: Open every other day.
-
Weeks 3โ4: Open twice a week.
-
After: Once a week, or not at all if jars are only for storage.
5) When is it โdoneโ?
Two weeks is the minimum for a smoother burn. Four to six weeks is the sweet spot for most strains. Heavier dessert/gas profiles love six to eight weeks.
Quick fixes for common issues
-
Too wet: RH wonโt drop below 65% โ remove packs, air buds briefly, re-jar.
-
Too dry: RH sits near 52โ55% โ add a fresh 62% pack for 24โ48 hours, then switch to 58%.
-
Grass/hay smell: You dried too fast or are curing too wet. Hold 58โ62% and give it more timeโmost of the โgreenโ note fades in a couple of weeks.
-
Musty or fuzzy growth: Mold. Donโt salvageโdiscard, sanitize, and tighten up your dry next run.
Drying that sets you up for a great cure
-
Hang whole branches in a dark room at 55โ60% RH, 15โ21 ยฐC.
-
Move room air gently; never blast buds directly.
-
Expect 7โ14 days until small stems snap.
-
In very dry places, leave more leaf on. In very humid places, lightly defoliate mid-dry for airflow.
Flavor targets by style
-
Bright/citrus/pine sativas: Cure 4โ6 weeks at 58% for a snappy, clean finish.
-
Dessert or gassy indicas/hybrids: Cure 6โ8 weeks at 62% early on for creamy mouthfeel, then store at 58%.
-
Balanced hybrids: Most land perfectly at 4โ6 weeks, 58โ62% RH.
Storage habits that keep jars great for months
-
Keep a small โdailyโ jar and leave your best colas sealed.
-
Store cool and dark. Sunlight and heat flatten terpenes fast.
-
Consolidate into smaller jars as you smoke through a batch to reduce air space.
One-page workflow (save it)
-
Dry 7โ14 days (55โ60% RH, 15โ21 ยฐC, dark).
-
Trim, jar 70โ80% full, add 58โ62% pack.
-
Burp daily in week 1, taper in weeks 2โ4.
-
Cure 4โ6+ weeks at 58โ62% RH.
-
Store cool, dark, minimal headspace; use a separate daily jar.
